Patrimonium · “A nomenclator walked beside his master and whispered the names he ought to know.”
a room of The Word Hoard
In Rome a nomenclator was the slave who walked beside a candidate and whispered the name of each citizen he was about to greet. This one does the same for you: it whispers the names, events and ideas of the Western tradition, and asks which you already knew.
It is the Vocabularium’s twin. The Vocabularium measures your words: how many you know, and where your reading starts to strain. The Nomenclator measures your inheritance: the historical and cultural literacy the great books assume, the people and happenings an author names without stopping to explain. Same honest test, same invented decoys, same purpose. One finds the words you lack; this one finds the names.
